The church of Agios Athanasios

The church of Agios Athanasios, Metropolitan least since the early 18th century, is located in the old town of Mytilini and is distinct from a distance because of the monumental Gothic spire. Interior decorated mainly woodcarvings and naturalistic frescoes and adorned by the relics of Saint Theodore of Byzantium, which hosts more than two centuries. The church belongs to the type of cross basilica with registered dome. The temple is one of the finest examples of post-Byzantine woodcarving in Lesvos. In the middle of the nave, beneath the double-headed eagle, a pontifical underground tomb. There, buried Metropolitan Mytilene who left his life during the period 1707-1783. Since 1798 housed the relics of martyr St. Theodore of Byzantium. In the church are hoarders also valuable relics.
