Kalloni Lesvos
Kalloni means Beauty .Beauty favored by nature, with the waters of the Gulf to embrace
the rich plain of
100 square kilometers to the framing, with
its historic monastery to stand like the guards .Kalloni has been the crossroad where the main road axes
of the island passed.
Two cities define the mythical and ancient past: Pyrra and Arisve.
Both are over the centuries and physical factors that
supported the economy and dynamic
presence on the island: The Gulf
of Kalloni in antiquity called Pyrraion Euripos
(from the city of Pyrra) and the excellent quality of
the land of the plain, inhabited and
densely populated, and today,
because of his wealth.
The coastal
areas of the Gulf of Kalloni
have joined the network "Natura 2000", as they are an excellent refuge and
breeding place of rare and protected
bird species. The salt pans (Alikes)of Kalloni
gather many birds (flamingos and other), offering observers a spectacular sight.
In the center of
the village impresses the visitor
the Primary
School of Kalloni for its excellent
architecture and garden.
Just above Kalloni road to Sigri lies the Monastery of Limonos. An important monastery in the heart of the
island with an impressive historical museum. The monastery was
built in 1523 by Bishop Ignatius Mithymnis Agalianos and honored
in the name of Archangel Michael. Inside the monastery there are many small and
large churches, old and new. Still, there are thousands of volumes of old books
and manuscripts of great spiritual value and rarity. Moreover, there is a
museum with galleries of images, manuscripts, vestments, liturgical vessels and
embroidery.
Two kilometers from
Kalloni to Petra is the Monastery Myrsiniotissa,
which is dedicated to the Virgin Mary
and took its name from the many myrtle covering
the area. The monastery was founded in 1487 and
later became the Abbey Annex
female Limonos from
Saint Ignatius .
